Look, if it's that easy for a PoC to deconstruct all the ways in which this book is horribly racist, then there is something wrong. If YOU as a white person cannot see that, then that's a product of your own privilege and you either need to step the goddamn back and reassess or at the very least shut your face. I trust Justina Ireland's assessment for these reasons, and we don't need books like this continuing to poison YA or kidlit. It's another in a long line of throwing casual racism at impressionable ages, and we don't goddamn need it, nor does it need the support. And people need to understand and accept that a white writer who writes something racist is not going to receive a backlash the way that a black writer will for calling out that racism. It has happened before and it'll happen again and again unless we, unified, take a stand against tolerating that racism at all in anything.
